MMT has long experience of working in the Baltic Sea, where there are thousands of shipwrecks scattered on the seabed surface.
During a surveillance mission on 13 June 1952, a Swedish DC-3 disappeared somewhere over the Baltic Sea. In 1991 it was confirmed that the DC-3 had been shot down by a Russian fighter plane.
51 years later, in June 2003, MMT and Deep Sea Productions detected the sunken body of the DC-3. Based on thorough background studies, a detailed methodology for the search was established. The wreckage of the DC-3 has now found its final resting place at the Swedish Air Force Museum in Linköping.
MMT is involved in a marine archaeological research project together with the Maritime Archaeological Research Institute (MARIS) at Södertörn University. The task includes investigations of what is known as the Ghost Ship in the Baltic Sea and aims to develop new methods for deepwater archaeology. The project has been awarded a science grant by the Swedish Knowledge Foundation, which is also partly financing the project. The expedition is documented by Deep Sea Productions (www.deepsea.se) for National Geographic and Swedish Television. MMT has close cooperation with Deep Sea Productions, a leading company for underwater documentaries in the Baltic Sea.
